GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Arthur Murray Dance Studios Presents Dancing for the Cure to honor Breast Cancer Survivor Mom

In 2005, the elegant and fit dance franchise maverick Maggie Spearin faced a diagnosis that plagues 1 in 8 women in the U.S. each year. She had breast cancer – a devastating disease with physical, emotional, psychological and financial pain that can last a lifetime. Thanks to her daughters, Leslie and Julie, the life long dancer and cancer survivor will preside as honorary judge March 19 at the J.W. Marriott Ballroom when local celebrities and stars from the dance world compete to fund cancer research for the Komen for the Cure.

Dancing for the Cure Grand Rapids is a star-studded gala evening that is the brainchild of the Sharp-Spearin sisters, who own two Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Grand Rapids and the master franchise for Atlanta Georgia ( The event promises to pit the likes of local media divas and dons against community players such as a local school superintendent, entrepreneurial magnates and community benefactors.

This is the world I know and what I am good at. This is what I can give as thanks to Komen for the Cure Grand Rapids – world class dance, an elegant evening, a chance for the community to come together and shine,” said Leslie (Spearin) Sharp.

Sharp, Spearin and staff are hosting “ballroom bootcamp” all month getting the local celebs whipped into five star dancing condition. They’re hustling to learn their Latin, salsa and ballroom dance moves.

I’m totally impressed with their musicality and natural sense of rhythm,” Sharp said.
Gala guests will be able to “vote” for the cure – each vote will cost a $10 donation to the Komen for the Cure foundation. All proceeds from the event also benefit the local chapter of the organization.
As a special treat, dance prima professionals Urs Geisenhainer and Agnes Kazmeirchak of Dancing with the Stars fame will give a live performance.

Local celebrities include: Rachael Ruiz (8West); Jimmy Le (local event czar); Shelley Irwin (WGVU Radio); John Gonzalez (Grand Rapids Press); Candace Matthews ( 2009 Corporate Executive of the Year by Black Enterprise Magazine); Carol VanAndel (Executive Director of the David & Carol VanAndel Foundation); Dr. Khan Nedd (President of Hospitalist of West Michigan); Tim Doty (Fox 17) and Bernard Taylor (Grand Rapids Public Schools District Superintendent).

Tickets for the event are $50 general admission; $75 VIP reserved floor-side seating, and can be purchased at .

The Grand Rapids Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was incorporated in 1999 after a breast cancer survivor named Lori Fedewa met with a few friends to tell them about an event called the Race for the Cure®. To learn more, visit:
